What are state space models and how do they benefit offline AI deployment?
State space models like Mamba represent a fundamentally different architecture from transformers. Instead of attention mechanisms that scale quadratically with sequence length, SSMs process sequences through a recurrent state that updates linearly. Mamba achieves comparable quality to transformers on many benchmarks while offering linear time complexity and constant memory per token during generation. For offline deployment, this means processing very long sequences without the memory explosion of the KV cache. Generation speed is also more consistent since each token requires the same compute regardless of position. However, SSMs can struggle with tasks requiring precise retrieval from earlier in the context. Hybrid architectures combining SSM layers with sparse attention layers aim to combine the efficiency of SSMs with the retrieval capability of transformers.
