What are the challenges of running multimodal AI models offline?
Multimodal offline AI faces unique challenges compared to text-only models. Vision-language models like LLaVA and CogVLM require both a vision encoder and language model, roughly doubling memory requirements. Audio-language models need separate speech processing components. The total memory footprint for a multimodal model can be 2-3x that of a text-only model of similar quality. Processing multiple modalities also increases compute requirements and latency. Image preprocessing, feature extraction, and cross-modal attention add computational overhead. However, recent models like Phi-3 Vision and LLaVA-NeXT achieve strong multimodal capabilities at smaller sizes suitable for edge deployment. Efficient architectures that share parameters across modalities help reduce overhead. For enterprises, multimodal offline AI enables local processing of documents containing images, diagrams, and text without cloud dependency.
